Chapter 16 – The Chamber of Knowledge

“If you don’t have other questions, I’d like to start with the registration.”

I nodded to Zanvert, then followed him out of the meeting room.

Once outside, Zanvert approached a guild staff member nearby and they started talking.

Soon after, he told me to show my guild card.

Unsure of what was going to happen, I took out my guild card and Zanvert gave it to the staff member.

“I’ll put 60 gold coins in your card, Tenma. The registration fee will be taken from your card. You can go on ahead to the “Chamber of Knowledge”.”

Wow, the guild has implemented this kind of payment system? What’s the Chamber of Knowledge, anyway?

More and more questions popped up in my head.

I was still a bit lost, but the female staff member led me to a room in the back.

The door leading into the room was decorated with a peculiar ornament, differently from all the other rooms.

“Once you’re inside, the instructions should be displayed, so please follow them.”

Following Zanvert’s advice, I went inside the room.

There was a table in front of me, with a half-transparent board on top of it…a familiar sight, very similar to a PC monitor.

『WELCOME TO THE KNOWLEDGE MANAGER SYSTEM!』

It’s just like the training system on the island!!

So I mentally shouted, and the message changed.

『PLEASE TOUCH THE SCREEN WITH YOUR GUILD CARD.』

Very advanced, indeed…

Starting to feel mentally exhausted, I put my card against the screen.

『SETTING UP USER PROFILE…』

『INITIAL SETTINGS…』

『INITIAL SETTINGS COMPLETE.』

…wait, what? “Initial settings”?? You’re joking, right!?

The familiar words sent me in a light panic: I looked around the whole room.

I made sure I was still inside the same room and breathed a sigh of relief. The time spent in the training facility had left its scars inside me, it turns out.

I somehow held back the impulse to bolt out of the room and looked at the screen again.

The menus “REGISTER” and “BROWSE” were displayed.

They really look similar…

I visualized the word “REGISTER” in my mind, and a new message popped up.

『COMMENCING FIRST REGISTRATION. DO YOU WISH TO REGISTER ANONYMOUSLY?』

I agreed, and the message continued.

『PLEASE PICK A REGISTRATION NAME.』

I hadn’t thought about that. Since I wanted to be anonymous…something like X? Maybe mix Tenma in it…TEX?

『NAME REGISTRATION…TEX. PLEASE PLACE THE KNOWLEDGE TO BE REGISTERED, IN WRITING, IN THE DEDICATED SLOT. THE REGISTRATION FEE IS 10 GOLD COINS. IN CASE REGISTRATION IS NOT POSSIBLE, 1 GOLD COIN WILL BE DETRACTED FROM YOUR BALANCE AS EXAMINATION FEE.』

I had no idea who was going to examine the documents, and on what basis…but there was nothing else to do but to proceed.

I first put “Learning and Practicing Physical Boost” on the screen. As soon as the paper touched the display, it was sucked in, as if sinking in water.

『PROCEED WITH REGISTRATION?』

Ooh, amazing…I got a SSS in authenticity!

I set up the conditions about usage fees, availability, etcetera, and completed the registration process. 

The minimum usage fee possible was 3 silver coins. It could be increased by units of three, and there was no upper limit.

The resulting earning would then be split evenly to three parties: one third to the user who registered the knowledge, one third to the guild, one third to the tax office.

Availability could be selected from four categories:

Private: Only registering user

Restricted: Only selected users

Group: Only users belonging to selected organizations/groups

Unlimited: Available to anyone

For “Learning and Practicing Physical Boost”, I chose to set the minimum fee of 3 silver coins and made it available to anyone.

I was really surprised by how advanced the system was, compared to the level of technology of my past life.

If they could create something so hi-tech, however, shouldn’t this world be a lot more advanced?

Could it be that this system was only developed recently?

…I had more and more questions to ask, but I put them aside for the moment and continued with the registration.

I registered “About Species Talent”, “Skill and Magic Level”, “Learning Lifestyle Magic” and “About Training Methods”, with the same fee and availability. In regards to “Increasing One’s Maximum Magic Power Amount”, since — as Zanvert had said — making it available to anyone could be risky, I set the availability as “restricted”. I was going to decide later what to do with it. In the end, the results of the registrations were like this:

All documents scored SSS in “Authenticity”, but “Fulfillment” was overall low. All sample data came from myself, after all, so it was probably judged as not being thorough enough. On top of that, there were topics I wasn’t sure I should write about and left ambiguous on purpose.

Once the registration process was over, a message popped up, saying that 60 gold coins were detracted from my account.

I went out of the room and found Zanvert waiting for me.

“Did the registration go well?”

“Yes, I could register everything without problems.”

“So…what “Authenticity” score did you get?”

“SSS, for all of the documents.”

“Wha-What!?”

Zanvert looked almost shocked. He then spoke again, breathing heavily with excitement.

“C-Could you let me browse the documents?”

“Eh? Of course.”

Zanvert then brought six permits.

In case a document is set with “restricted” availability, a permit must be used to make it available to designated users. The registering user just needs to write the document title and author name on the permit. If a user name is added on the permit, only that user can use it, making it effective to prevent leaks.

“Wait, you will only let me browse “Increasing one’s maximum magic power amount”? I really need to have “Learning and Practicing Physical Boost” and “Learning Lifestyle Magic” too.” Of course, the others too, if possible!”

Zanvert pleaded, almost desperately.

“Other than “Increasing one’s maximum magic power amount”, all documents are set with unlimited availability. There shouldn’t be any problems, even if the knowledge inside them spreads.”

Zanvert reflected for a moment.

“…yes, I suppose it’s fine to make them available to the whole public…”

Nodding and mumbling to himself, Zanvert went inside the “Chamber of Knowledge”.

While I was waiting for him to come out, I took the time to reorganize my thoughts.

The “Chamber of Knowledge” seemed to be a room designated to use the “Knowledge Management System”. It might have other functions too, but I had no time to check now: it would have to wait for another day.

More importantly, I wondered who had created and supervised the guild cards and “Knowledge Management System”. It was similar to the training island’s system, so I suspected they were related to the deity who created this world.

…well, It’s not like I had no free time. I should start gathering information.

I had reached this conclusion when Zanvert came back out of the “Chamber of Knowledge”.
